What is Asbestos

Asbestos Services at M.C. Schaff Companies

Asbestos is a mineral used in commercial products such as insulation for pipes and boilers, vinyl floor tile and linoleum, roofing and more. While many materials containing asbestos are being removed from existing office buildings, homes, apartment buildings, and other structures, you can still purchase products that contain asbestos. In its solid form – like floor tile or sealed pipe wrap – asbestos is typically not dangerous. Asbestos becomes a health risk when the material is disturbed or friable, meaning it can be crumbled or reduced to powdered by hand pressure. This can happen during the natural aging process or during a renovation. When disturbed, asbestos fibers can be disbursed into the air and if inhaled, they travel deep into the lungs which can cause Asbestosis (scarring of the lung tissue) and other health issues.
